Playoff holes key Mars win

Mars' Ben Mullins and Josh Bartley finished two strokes better than Knoch's Stefan Carlsson and Chris Kier in a two-hole playoff to give the Planets boys golf squad a 204-204 section victory at Rittswood Wednesday.

Mullins and Bartley combined for a 9 on the first hole and 6 on the second hole while Carlsson and Kier had an 11 and 6.

Carlsson earned medalist honors with a round of 36.

Mars (3-0, 1-0) will host Seneca Valley today at Rittswood.

Butler 201, Shaler 224 — Gino Baraffio carded a 37, Tommy Dimun 39 and Cory Pizor 40 to lead the Tornado in a season-opening win at Hiland Golf Course.

In the junior varsity match, Zach Folk and Kaden Rock each fired a 47 at Pheasant Ridge to lead Butler to a 245-251 triumph over the Titans.

Butler will host Slippery Rock Friday at Butler Country Club.

Freeport 177, Summit Academy 239 — Cole Hepler and Audrey Clawson shared medalist honors with a 34 for the Yellowjackets (3-1, 1-0).

Redbank Valley 237, Karns City 254 — Mike Riley fired a 46, but the Gremlins suffered a loss to the Bulldogs at Bostonia Country Club.

Ashton McGinnis also broke 50 during the defeat with a 49. Karns City returns to action on Tuesday at home against Union.

Redbank Valley (237): Vinny Montanori 40, Josh Shick 43, John Woodall 46, Anna Dukovich 51, Ryan Niccolai 57.

• At the 14-team Warren Invitational, Slippery Rock fired a 330 to finish in second place behind Meadville at Blueberry Hill Golf Club.

Meadville, led by medalist Charlie Holt's 72, finished with 322 points. Warren (332), Titusville (333) and Corry (341) rounded out the top five places.

Slippery Rock's Brett Rinker finished second overall with a 74 while Bob Paczkowski was fourth with a 75. Matt Badger and Zac McCue accounted for the Rockets' other scores with an 86 and 95, respectively.

Slippery Rock will face Sharon in an 18-hole match today at Tam O'Shanter.

Girls TennisBurrell 4, Knoch 1 — Alice Gordon accounted for the Knights lone win at No. 2 singles in this non-section match.The Knights (2-1) will host North Allegheny Friday.Singles: Jessica Linza (B) def.
