NEW YORK — Michael Weiner, who succeeded Donald Fehr as head of the baseball players' union three years ago and negotiated a labor deal last fall in a seamless transition, is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor.

The union said that he began treatments on Monday and that they are expected to last about one month. The union said it anticipates he will continue to work from its New York office on a daily basis during the treatments.

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics turned the third triple play in the major leagues this season during the fifth inning of their game against the Minnesota Twins.Justin Morneau and Ryan Doumit singled against A's starter Brett Anderson before Trevor Plouffe hit a sharp grounder to Oakland third baseman Josh Donaldson. Donaldson stepped on the bag and made a quick relay to second baseman Adam Rosales, who threw to first baseman Chris Carter to complete the 5-4-3 triple play.

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Cincinnati Reds minor leaguer Billy Hamilton bolted to a record 146th stolen base of the season and kept running, swiping four in the first game of Double-A doubleheader.Hamilton added his 147th steal in the final inning of Pensacola's 4-2 loss to Montgomery. Hamilton stole 104 in the first half of the season with Class A Bakersfield, then was promoted to the Southern League.Hamilton broke the record for steals by minor league teams affiliated with big league organizations set by Vince Coleman in 1983 with 145 for Macon in the Class A South Atlantic League.Rickey Henderson set the modern major league record with 130 in 1982.

PHILADELPHIA — Michael Vick had an MRI exam that revealed he has a contusion of his ribs and the surrounding soft tissue from a hit he took in his sixth play of the Eagles’ victory at New England on Monday night.The Eagles are considering holding Vick out of their last two preseason games even though he needs the work.
