WARREN, Ohio — The Becky Smith Memorial Scholarship is accepting applications from Youngstown State University graduate students from Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties.

The $500 scholarship is named in honor of Butler's late Main Street manager, who died Sept. 24, 2011, of injuries she suffered in a car crash the previous day, and is available to YSU graduate students studying history.

The scholarship is sponsored by the Trumbull County Historical Society, where Smith was a member and did volunteer work for Cortland's historical district, the Warren Main Street program and Warren Grows before coming to Butler.

A second scholarship in Smith's name also has been created for Trumbull County students attending Kent State Trumbull Campus. Smith was a magna cum laude graduate of Kent State in 2003, earning a degree in interior design.

PITTSBURGH — In addition to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Seneca Valley Chiefs took the field Sunday night at Heinz Field.The Chiefs, whose players are ages 10 and 11, ran about a dozen plays against the West Allegheny Indians during the half-time of Steelers-Indianapolis Colts game.The Chiefs scored three touchdowns and the Indians scored two touchdowns.Chiefs Players Cam Vozel and Brennan Hayes represented the team during their coin toss. And Chiefs player Luke Harris stood by the Steelers team captains during their coin toss.The Steelers won the coin toss as well as the pre-season matchup against the Colts, 26-24.“It was an experience the boys will remember for a lifetime,” said Tony Harris, football coordinator for the Seneca Valley Junior Football Association of Cranberry.The Chiefs are coached by Don Hayes.

The Butler County Republican Committee is set to open a Butler office in the lobby of the former Penn Theater on Main Street by Labor Day.The committee on Friday opened a southern county site at 121 N. Main St. in Zelienople.Jeff Smith, committee chairman, said nearly 100 people attended that opening.The annual Republican Party picnic will be 4 p.m. Sunday at the Carousel Shelter in Alameda Park, Butler Township.
