U.S. Air Force Reserve Airman Vanessa Bartoe graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Bartoe is the daughter of Vincent and Michelle Bartoe of Rimersburg. Her grandparents are Ed and Pat Maley of East Brady, Helen Bartoe of Bradys Bend and the late Kermit Bartoe.

She is a 2011 graduate of Union High School.

U.S. Marine Corps Pvt. Jose Bonilla-Cumba, son of Maria Cumba of Butler, earned the title of U.S. Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Bonilla-Cumba is a 2009 graduate of Butler High School.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Zachary Smith recently completed Airman Leadership School at McChord Air Force Base, Washington. Cited for academic achievement, he earned the best grades in his class and was awarded distinguished graduate.

Smith is the son of Bernadette Smith of Butler and Robert Smith of Renfrew. He graduated from Butler High School in 2005.

U.S. Army Pfc. Bradley Swartzlander graduated from basic combat training Aug. 9 at Fort Jackson, S.C.

Swartzlander graduated from Butler High School in 2011 and attended Butler County Community College. He will attend Indiana (Pa.) University this fall for his sophomore year. He is enrolled in the Army ROTC program at Indiana and is currently assigned to the 393 Medical Company in Coraopolis.

Swartzlander is the son of Debbie and Ted Swartzlander of Butler.
