Carl Bean

Carl Bennett Bean, M.D., 95, of Concordia at Lund, formerly of Butler, passed away on Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospice.

Born April 3, 1917, in Cochranton, he was the son of John Bean and Maude McCracken Bean.

He was a graduate of Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. An internship followed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He then became a medical officer attached to the 4th Air Force with assignments in the United States and South Pacific during World War II.

Subsequently, he specialized in radiology at Yale University, the University of Pittsburgh and West Penn Hospital. In 1951, he was certified by the American Board of Radiology. He belonged to numerous medical societies including the Butler County Medical Society, the Pittsburgh Roentgen Society, the Pennsylvania Radiological Society, the American College of Radiology and the Society of Nuclear Medicine.

Dr. Bean was Chief of the Department of Radiology at the Mercy Hospital in Altoona and at the Veterans Administration Hospitals in Lebanon, Pa., and Butler.

He was a Rotarian with more than 50 years of service, including being president of the Altoona Rotary Club from 1962 to 1963.

He was a member of the Jefferson Center Presbyterian Church in Saxonburg.

Surviving are his daughter, Mary B. Bates of Maple Shade, N.J.; his son, John D. (Debra) Bean of Midlothian, Va.; one brother, Russell (Vera) Bean of Cleveland; three nieces; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ida Jane Fordyce Bean, who died Feb. 26, 2011; and one brother, Gordon Bean and his wife, Georgie.

BEAN — Friends of Carl Bennett Bean, M.D., who passed away Saturday, July 14, 2012, are invited to attend memorial services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lund Chapel at Concordia, 134 Marwood Road, Cabot. Interment will be private for the family.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to Concordia Lutheran Ministries, 134 Marwood Road, Cabot, PA 16023.Arrangements were handled by the Fox Funeral Home, Saxonburg.
