Fitting farewell

There will be no postseason for the Butler BlueSox. But they’re closing the regular season like there ought to be.

The BlueSox ended the home portion of the 2012 Prospect League baseball season with wins of 9-0 and 7-2 against Slippery Rock at Pullman Park over the weekend.

“I wish we could keep going,” BlueSox manager Anthony Rebyanski said. “It’s going to be sad watching all of these guys depart after tomorrow night.

“We’ve had a (roster) turnover of 28 guys since March 15. I’m mentally exhausted right now. It’s tough to bring a bunch of guys together from all over the place and have them mesh as a team, but these guys did it.”

Regardless of the outcome of tonight’s season finale at Lorain County, the BlueSox (32-26) will end the season with the best overall record in the franchise’s four-year history.

They attained that record despite losing 12 of 15 games after posting a 9-2 mark 11 games into the second half.

“It’s been great being a part of that,” Rebyanski said of the overall record. I mean, we ran into a brick wall there for a while. We hit it hard. That was emotionally and mentally frustrating for all of us.

“It takes a special group to break out of something like that. Nobody on this team ever gave up.”

Brett Sullivan was the winning pitcher for the BlueSox Saturday night, scatttering six hits and striking out six in seven scoreless innings. George Roberts, Jason Radwan, Eric Hess and Grove City product Alex Miklos all had two hits in the 9-0 victory.

Hess scored three runs and Roberts’ two-run double in the third inning snapped a scoreless tie.

Eddie Emes allowed two runs in seven innings to win Sunday night’s game, throwing only 77 pitches in the 7-2 triumph. Elliott Caldwell had four singles, extending his Prospect League single-season hit record to 95.

The previous record was 80 hits in a campaign. Caldwell is hitting .373 on the year.

“I’ve hit hjgher than .370 before, but this is the first time I’ve ever had this many at bats in a summer,” Caldwell said. “It’s been a blast playing in front of these Butler crowds.”

Miklos began the weekend hitting .220, but added three hits — including two doubles and two runs — Sunday night after getting a double and single Saturday.

“I’ve been working on different things all summer and it’s nice to see that hard work pay off late in the season,” Miklos said. “I loved the enthusiasm in the stands here all year.

“We’d get a crowd of 400 to one of our games at Kent State on a good day. Playing in front of more than 1,000 here on some nights was something I’ve never experienced.”

The BlueSox scored four runs in the fifth inning Sunday to wipe out a 2-1 deficit. Roberts drilled a two-run homer into the trees behin d the left field wall to cap the rally.

Radwan had a double and three singles, Brandon Costantino contributing three RBI to the BlueSox’ 16-hit attack. Butler hit safely in every inning Sunday night.

The Sliders fell to 10-19 in the second half, 20-39 overall.

“We had 15 and a half players here tonight,” Sliders manager Shawn Pynn said. “Injuries have really taken their toll on us.

“At this point, I just want to get everybody through this healthy.”

Trent Wooldridge had two singles for the Sliders Saturday. Zach Looney had a triple, single and RBI, Steve Sulcoski a double and two singles, Devin DeYoung two singles on Sunday.

The Sliders end their season tonight, hosting Richmond at 7:05 p.m. at Critchfield Park.

Rebyanski has been invited back to manage the BlueSox in 2013. His wife is expecting their first child next month.

“I’ve been offered a chance to come back and I’d love to come back,” Rebyanski said. “But these next few months will be life-changing for my family. We’ll see how it goes.

“This ownership and front office are the best I’ve ever worked with. I’d like nothing better than to stay with them.”
