Food stamp charges filed

A Butler County woman is accused of illegally receiving more than $13,000 in federal food stamps dating back to 2009.

The Pennsylvania Inspector General’s Office on Tuesday charged Misty Walters, 34, of Jefferson Township with a felony count of fraudulently obtaining Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

The mother of five children, according to court documents, Walters failed to disclose that the father of three of those children was living with her and was contributing to the income of the household between March 1, 2009, and Feb. 28, 2011.

The defendant, in applying for benefits at the Department of Public Welfare’s Butler County Assistance Office in Butler, claimed that during that time she was living only with her children.

But an agent with the Inspector General’s Office said Walter was living with 35-year-old William D. Jordan, who was employed at an armored services company.

Investigators alleged that Walters obtained $13,657 in food stamps for which was not entitled.

Additionally, documents said, she fraudulently received $303 in Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program benefits in 2009.

If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, fines up to $15,000, mandatory restitution to the commonwealth and program disqualification.

A preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 27 at the office of District Judge Pete Shaffer.
