CHICAGO — The Pittsburgh Pirates have optioned pitcher Daniel McCutchen to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room for reliever Chad Qualls.The Pirates announced the move Wednesday.Pittsburgh is the third team this season for Qualls, who began the year with Philadelphia and was acquired in a trade with the New York Yankees on Tuesday. He is 2-1 with a 4.89 ERA this season.McCutchen, who was recalled Tuesday, has not pitched in the majors this season after making 73 appearances with the Pirates a year ago.

NEW YORK — Traded to the Yankees, Casey McGehee decided to shave his beard in private. No televised grooming, like Jose Reyes had when his dreadlocks were shorn on the MLB Network last winter.“I don't think they had enough viewers to watch that,” McGehee said Wednesday after reporting to New York. “Reyes might be able to pull it off. I don't think they want to watch a chubby white guy shave his beard off.”The 29-year-old was immediately given his first start in pinstripes, playing first base against Baltimore in place of injured Mark Teixeira. He went 0 for 2 with two walks, two runs and an eighth-inning sacrifice fly in New York's 12-3 win.

PHILADELPHIA — Peter Laviolette led the Flyers within two wins of a Stanley Cup championship. Philadelphia is willing to give their coach a few more years to finish the job.Laviolette and the Flyers agreed Wednesday to a two-year contract extension that will take him through 2014-15.
