BlueSox snap 8-game skid in rain
When you fall into a long losing streak, sometimes it can seem like days to break it.
Well, that’s how it happened for the Butler BlueSox Thursday — and Friday.
In a game that took two days, and 6 hours, 22 minutes to play, the BlueSox snapped an eight-game losing streak by holding off the Richmond RiverRats 5-4 in a continuation of Thursday’s Prospect League game at Pullman Park, which was suspended Thursday entering the fifth inning.
That game was delayed due to another rain and lightning event on Friday ,but was completed. The same could not be said for Friday’s regularly-scheduled contest, which was called with Butler leading 1-0 in the second inning, also due to lightning and a steady rainfall
“It was a close one, but a win is a win and we’ll take it,” said Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski. “Hopefully, this doesn’t come down to a tiebreaker. That’s why (Richmond manager) Tyler (Lairson) and I really wanted to get this other game in.”
The RiverRats lead the Eastern Division at 12-6, while Butler is three games back at 10-10.
Butler, powered by a pair of home runs by George Roberts and a two-run triple by Grove City High graduate Alex Miklos, had carried a 5-2 lead into Friday’s action before the RiverRats plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning off Butler reliever Jon Danielczyk.
Cody Campbell laced a two-out, two-run triple to drive home Jake Welch and Justin Pearson to make it a one-run game.
The score would hold up as Danielczyk did not allow another run over the next three innings and Adam Dian picked up the save, allowing just a two-out walk in the final inning. He struck out Campbell to end the game.
“I keep telling these guys, there’s a lot of mental things going on in a losing streak,” Rebyanski said. “They had to deal with the rain, all the water on the field, the lightning, the delays.
“It’s good to go out and get those high-fives again,” Rebyanski added.
Danielczyk earned the win, picking up five strikeouts and allowing two walks in his four innings.
Hayden Walch was stellar in relief for the RiverRats. He surrendered no runs and just three hits in four inning with four strikeouts.
Rebyanski was just thrilled to get past the losing streak and hopes his team can focus on better games ahead.
“This really took a toll on our guys and myself,” Rebyanski said. “You start to question yourself when you lose. ... It’s not that we played horribly.”
The BlueSox were hoping to ride that momentum into Friday night’s game, but two lightning delays put a stop to the evening.
Butler had scored a run in the bottom of the first on a one-out walk to Elliott Caldwell, who advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and came around to score on two wild pitches.
Butler starter Kyle Thomas had retired the first four batters he faced, but a second lightning delay, followed by a steady downpour, would be the last.
Notes: The day did see two records broken as Caldwell set a Prospect League record with his 81st hit of the season in the early game and still has 10 games remaining this season. Also, with 528 in attendance, the BlueSox hurdled last year’s record.
