Riesmeyer joining Mars Hall of Fame
This is the third in a series of five articles profiling the Mars Sports Hall of Fame's Class of 2012.MT. LEBANON — John Riesmeyer was feeling pretty good after getting the word about being inducted into this year's Mars Sports Hall of Fame. Then, his daughters chimed in.“It was greatly appreciated and inside, I was excited,” Riesmeyer said. “Then my daughters said, 'You weren't that good.' That will bring you back down to earth.”Riesmeyer, 43, of Mt. Lebanon, is a 1987 graduate and was the Planets' quarterback as well as defensive back. He was also a forward on the basketball team and outfielder/pitcher for the baseball team.It was in football that Riesmeyer, a currency trader for BNY Mellon, thrived although the Planets had their struggles.“In the mid-to-late 1980s, we were average to below average in football,” Riesmeyer said, “slightly above average in baseball and slightly good in basketball although in 1987, we won the first boys section championship and I believe we're still the only team that won a section title.“I think I was best in football, but I enjoyed basketball more. Probably because we won the section championship. Most of my memories come from basketball,” he added.Riesmeyer's athleticism showed in his final game at Mars, where he played at receiver and pulled in a pair of touchdown passes from Doug Pilarski and added an extra point in a 19-0 victory over Quaker Valley to finish the season at 3-6.Riesmeyer went on to earn the Eyth/Williams Award as the top male athlete at Mars. The award honors service to the school, character and scholastic achievement.Riesmeyer moved on to Carnegie Mellon University. In the fall of 1990, as a senior, Riesmeyer helped direct the Tartans to an undefeated regular season and made the post season. CMU fell to Lycoming, wich went on to lose in the national championship game to Allegheny College, 21-14 in overtime. That year, the Tartans set school records for 237 first downs and 40 rushing touchdowns, marks that still stand today.“I had a great experience there,” Riesmeyer noted. After graduation, Riesmeyer took a job in New York with JP Morgan where he would stay for years working at various banks as a foreign currency trader. He and his wife, Sharon, who he met at CMU, moved back to the Pittsburgh area in 1999.The Riesmeyers have four children, three daughters (15, 13, 3) and a son (8), the latter who suffers from severe Down's syndrome. In turn, Riesmeyer has devoted himself into working with the city of Pittsburgh chapter and serves as a co-chairman among other things.Reismeyer still comes back to Mars from time to time as his parents live just down the road from the school. It will be just a short trip to honor their son, who will be joined by Kent Shoemaker, John Schessler, Jeff Danner and Rob Fester as the other inductees.Note: The Mars Sports Hall of Fame's Class of 2012 will be honored with a dinner and ceremony at Mars Middle School Sept. 7 prior to the Planets' home football game against Derry. A $20 ticket buys one admission to both the Hall of Fame dinner and football game. If interested, call Tim Tyler at 724-283-0944.
