Silent night

Butler BlueSox runner Brendan Costantino slides safely into second base as Chillicothe second baseman Ryan Cypret (9) and shortstop Kevin Zak (12) can't pull in a high throw on a pickoff attempt Wednesday night at Pullman Park. The visiting Paints won the game, 5-2.

Go figure.

Two teams with batting averages above .300 and with 88 home runs between them — and the Butler BlueSox lose a pitcher's duel at Pullman Park.

Chillicothe's Jack Peck worked seven solid innings and closer Trace Dempsey earned a dominating save as the Paints scored a 5-2 Prospect League baseball victory Wednesday night.

The win gave the Paints a sweep of the two-game series between the teams.

“I'm thrilled to get out of here with a couple of wins,” Paints manager Greg Cypret said. “We were 0-4 at this place before this week. We couldn't do a thing here.

“Butler has a good team. They pitch. They hit. They can run. That team is going to hang around.”

The BlueSox committed four errors Wednesday, three of them resulting in Chillicothe runs. They also had a runner thrown out at third with one out in the bottom of the first inning.

“Our fundamentals have been lacking the past couple of games,” Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski said. “Our base running has taken a step backward and that's my fault.

“When we get thrown out on the bases, that all starts with me. We have to slow ourselves down a little bit, play in control.”

The loss spoiled a strong mound effort by BlueSox right-hander Calyn Young, making his debut with the team. Young, from Southwestern Oklahoma, struck out eight and walked one in eight innings. He threw 97 pitches and scattered seven hits.

Young, who pitched for BlueSox coach Justin Thomas last summer, was in Myrtle Beach when he got the call to join the team. He replaces pitcher Chris Marangon, who has been shut down for the summer.

“He deserved better,” Rebyanski said. “Calyn pitched a strong game against an excellent hitting team.”

Cypret agreed.

“He mixed his pitches well and we had trouble timing him up,” the Paints' skipper said. “But Jack Peck threw equally well for us. He has confidence in two pitches and was throwing them both for strikes.”

Justin Brozick homered to left leading off the third inning, giving the BlueSox a 2-1 lead. It was his second round-tripper of the year and the team's 31st.

The Paints answered with single tallies in the fourth and fifth. Giancarlo Brognoni doubled to left and scored on Aaron Hopper's single to right in the fourth.

Chillicothe had runners at first and third with one out in the fifth when Ryan Cypret tried stealing second. No one covered the bag and catcher Matt Albaugh's throw sailed into center field, allowing a run to score.

The score remained 3-2 through eight innings as the BlueSox managed only two singles in the final six innings, no hits over the final four frames.

Elliott Caldwell had doubled to left in the first inning — his 75th hit of the season — but was caught stealing third by the pitcher. With two outs, Kyle Petty walked and George Roberts tripled to center to bring home Butler's first run.

“We cost ourselves a run that inning,” Rebyanski said. “We missed a ball in the outfield (Alex Miklos letting a single skip by him) that cost us a run right after that. Mistajes l;ike those kill you in games. We have to make the routine plays.”

Still, the BlueSox had a chance late. With two outs in the eighth, Paints reliever Jack Quigley hit Caldwell with a pitch, then walked Petty and Roberts to load the bases.

Dempsey, entering his sophomore year at Ohio State, came on to strike out Albaugh to end the threat. He retired the BlueSox in order in the ninth, striking out two more.

“Trace just thrives in those situations,” Cypret said. “He loves to pitch under pressure.”

Chillicothe added two runs in the top of the ninth against Eric Dorsch as Cody Gaertner and Kevin Zak had RBI singles.

Tonight's game against West Virginia will be the 100th home game in BlueSox history.
