Sliders pound RiverRats
SLIPPERY ROCK — In a pair of games played seven days apart, Slippery Rock Sliders manager Shawn Pynn experienced a full gamut of emotions against not only the same team, but against the same pitcher.
On July 9, the Sliders’ bats were nearly silent against Richmond southpaw Pat Van Daalwyk in a 5-1 Prospect League baseball loss and Pynn voiced his frustration after the game.
Monday night, Slippery Rock got its revenge.
All nine players in the Sliders’ lineup tallied at least two hits in a 12-2 pounding of the RiverRats at Jack Critchfield Park.
Van Daalwyk was chased from the game after just four innings, giving up five runs — four earned — on 11 hits. The Sliders totaled 23 total hits in the game.
“The last time we faced him, he was getting six (extra) inches on the corners,” said Pynn of Van Daalwyk. “It was the same for both teams, but we weren’t able to adjust and he took advantage of it. Tonight, he wasn’t getting those six inches.”
While Slippery Rock’s entire order contributed to the avalanche of offense, it was Pat Gelwicks who led the way.
The first baseman, who did not play in the loss on July 9, went 4-for-4 with a double, two home runs and seven RBIs.
“We faced him a couple of times already this season,” said Gelwicks of Richmond’s starting pitcher. “Tonight, we just stayed back and waited for our pitch. This was my best game since high school. That’s the last time I hit two home runs in one game.”
The Sliders (3-8) broke the ice with two runs on four hits in the second inning. Gelwicks’ double plated Derek Peake and Steve Sulcoski.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Dan Hurlimann hit a leadoff home run over the scoreboard in right field for a 4-0 lead.
The first of Gelwicks’ three-run home runs came in the bottom of the fifth with Sulcoski and Hurlimann on base.
His second blast was in the seventh and scored Sulcoski and Alex Lang ahead of him.
“He’s got a torn labrum (in his left shoulder), but when he gets a few days of rest, he can be very strong at the plate for us,” Pynn said of Gelwicks.
“My shoulder doesn’t bother me when I’m batting, and, especially when I’m playing first, not even when I’m throwing,” said Gelwicks. “There are some days when it just gets sore, but I can usually battle through it.”
Slippery Rock starting pitcher Ben Rawding appreciated all the offense, but didn’t need it. He pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out seven and walking one.
“Tonight, we saw the Ben that we were promised,” said Pynn. “He consistently got ahead in the count and was stoic on the mound.”
“Their guy was better tonight,” Richmond manager Tyler Lairson said in a tip of his cap to Rawding. “Slippery Rock took advantage of our mistakes.”
Richmond (7-2) scored both of its runs in the top of the ninth inning. With two outs, Michael Meredith singled home Derek Trovillion and Garrett Ruckel.
Hayden Walch (two innings), Tyler Eaton (one) and Kyle Tibbs (one) all pitched in relief for the RiverRats.
