SR Township officials weigh zoning change

Low-density district might be amended

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — The township may amend its R-1 low-density residential zoning district.

The change would add a definition for event or conference centers to the list of conditional uses for the district.

Township supervisors are scheduled to discuss the potential change at 8 p.m. Monday at the township building, 155 Branchton Road.

Under the amendment, such centers would be permitted on sites that are greater than 15 acres. Lighting would have to be designed to prevent glare to adjacent properties. Amplified sound would have to stop at 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and at 11 p.m. Fridays through Sundays and on holidays.

The idea for the change came after members of the Nicholas family asked about modifying the zoning district.

A 66-acre property along Whitehouse Way in Slippery Rock Park has been owned by the family since 1925. No one lives on the property, but the family uses it regularly.

Lisa Konesni, a member of the family, said that despite the potential amendment, the family has no intention of changing the property.

“What we want to do is maintain it,” Konesni said. “We don’t want it commercial.”

With the change in zoning, the family would be able to rent the property to people who want to stay there for brief periods. The money from that would be used to maintain the property.

A public hearing about the change was held June 25. Konesni said many people were supportive of the change, but others were not.

“There were people with concerns, understandably,” Konesni said.

The R-1 district makes up less than 10 percent of the township.
