Crowe, Rihn prove aces on golf course

WEST MIDDLESEX — Dwight “Dee” Crowe and Lance Rihn are longtime members of the Butler County Bowling Association Hall of Fame.

They're not bad golfers, either.

That was evidenced last month when they scored holes-in-one during the same round of golf at Oaktree Country Club.

The aces occurred June 12, during a round of “Tuesday Tour” play.

“There's 28 of us who get together every Tuesday at different courses in the region,” Crowe said. “We'be been at this for 10 or 11 years now. We call it the Tuesday Tour.”

But two golfers had never aced on the same day before.

Crowe scored his ace on the No. 3, 125-yard hole at Oaktree, using a 9-iron. It was the first hole-in-one on the Tuesday Tour since Ray Downing scored an ace three years ago.

Downing was playing in Rihn's foursome on this June day. And that quartet was playing right behind Crowe's foursome.

“I saw Dee's shot roll in,” Rihn said. “We were heading for the tee box on No. 4 when the shot landed on the green, directly in front of the cup, and rolled right in.”

Rihn scored his hole-in-one on the 162-yard, No. 9 hole, using a 7-wood.

He saw his own shot find the hole as well.

“My tee shot landed on the green to the right of thecup, then rolled down a slope to the left and went in,” Rihn said. “I couldn't believe it went in.”

Crowe could.

“Lance always did find ways to upstage me,” Crowe said, laughing.

Crowe was inducted into the BCBA Hall of Fame in 2002. He was part of the state championship bowling team in 1996 and carried one of the top three averages in the history of the Butler County Men's Traveling League.

Rihn was inducted in 2005. He was a BCBA member for 30 years, a former association president, and held the county record of 16 career perfect games at the time of his induction.

A former Butler resident, Rihn moved to Fort Myers, Fla., years ago. He spends his summers in Butler now so he can remain a part of the Tuesday Tour.

“This is my second summer of doing this tour,” he said. “It's a blast. It's a great bunch of guys. We play some really nice courses in Pennsylvania and Ohio.”

Rihn began golfing in 1985 and the hole-in-one was the second of his lifetime. The first was on a 165-yard hole in Pinehurst, N.C., two years ago.

Crowe has been golfing for 53 years. He's had three previous holes-in-one — two at Oakview Golf Club in Slippery Rock and one at Mohawk Trails. The latter was on a 198-yard hole.
