Students compete in tournament

Twelve Butler Area School District students competed April 28 to 30 in the Academic Game Leagues of America national tournament against about 1,100 other students from across the country in Wheeling, W. Va.

The students competed in mathematics and language/grammar.

The students qualified for the national tournament by finishing on a first- place team and/or being undefeated as an individual player at the state competitions earlier in the year at Slippery Rock University and Geneva College.

Representing the district were: from Meridian Elementary, Bryce Rearick, Nate Cornibe, Jordan Kauffman, Logan Francis, Elijah Peterson; Emily Brittain Elementary, Timmy Porter, Robert Hays, Miles Schaeffer; Connoquenessing Elementary, Connor Ollio; Summit Elementary, Faith Hansotte; and Butler Junior High School, Jacob Surkosky and Jonathan Fair.

Timmy Porter finished the grammar competition undefeated with a perfect score of 24 points.

The highest overall point scorers were Jacob Surkosky with 46 out of 48 possible points and Robert Hays with 44 out of 48.

These two students have qualified for Academic Excellence Scholarships provided by the Butler Parent's and Educators for Gifted Students Support Group through contributions by the Butler PM Rotary Club and Keystone Midstream Services.
