Bus fares set to increase

The first of two bus fare increases by the Butler Transit Authority will go into effect Sunday.

The increase is for cash fares and discount passes, but the unlimited use 30-day passes will not increase until the second planned rate increase in July 2015. Seniors and children newborn to age 6 continue to ride free.

The fare increase, announced in April, is to cover increased fuel prices and insurance costs and maintenance on an aging, six-bus fleet, according to the authority.

The last rate increase was in 2003.

Sunday’s rate increase will produce an estimated $40,000 to $50,000 for the authority annually, according to BTA executive director John Paul.

A full fare schedule is available on the authority’s website, www.butlertransitauthority.com
