U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-4th, this week introduced legislation to rename the Ellwood City Post Office the Sergeant Leslie H. Sabo Jr. Post Office Building in recognition of Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Leslie H. Sabo.
A Vietnam War hero, Sabo on May 16 was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony.
“The story of Sgt. Sabo’s service is an inspiration to us all,” Altmire said. “By renaming the Ellwood City Post Office in his honor we can do our small part to pay tribute to this exceptionally heroic man and his family for the sacrifices they made for our country.”
Sabo, 22, died in Cambodia on May 10, 1970, during an ambush that killed seven of his comrades in the 101st Airborne Division.
His Medal of Honor recommendation languished for decades until it was discovered in the National Archives in 1999 by Alton Mabb, a Vietnam veteran from Florida.
After being contacted by Sabo’s widow, Rose Mary Sabo-Brown, Altmire and U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach, R-Chester, urged Defense Department officials to complete consideration of this case.
