GC grad Revesz gets win for Sliders
SLIPPERY ROCK — As any relief pitcher knows, you have to have a short memory.
Count Jason Revesz among one of them.
After surrendering a pair of runs in one inning on Wednesday, Revesz answered the bell on Thursday to give the Slippery Rock Sliders a much-needed boost.
After a two-run single by Chillicothe’s Jared Kujawa tied the game at 4, Revesz entered with two on and just one out.
A pop-out and liner ended the threat and Revesz would retire eight of the nine batters he faced.
In the meantime, RBI singles by Pat Guinane, Derek Peake and Steve Sulcoski in the eighth inning lifted the Sliders to a 7-4 triumph over the Paints at Jack Critchfield Park.
“I was excited to get in,” said Revesz, a Grove City High graduate and Kent State redshirt freshman. “Yesterday I didn’t pitch too well and gave up a few runs. It was great to come in and pitch like that.”
Revesz would induce Jeff Keller to pop out with runners on the corners, then after Kujawa took second base on defensive indifference, Mike Nadratowski flew out to left to end the threat.
After both teams went down 1-2-3 in their next at-bat, the Sliders got things started when Paints’ hurler Mike Dodakain hit Mike Porcaro with a pitch.
Ryan Abernathy followed with a single that put runners at first and third. After Abernathy took second and Pat Gelwicks was intentionally walked to load the bases, Guinane slapped an RBI single to left to give the Sliders the lead.
Peake then added an infield single that plated another run, then with one out, Sulcoski added another infield single to make it 7-4.
Revesz gave up a single to Dan Zuchowski to start the ninth, but a fly out, then two strikeouts ended the game.
“Our pitchers did an excellent job,” Sliders manager Shawn Pynn said. “Even when they got runners on base, we got the outs we needed. When our starting pitcher (Brent Roehrich) got in trouble, we brought in a relief pitcher (Zach Walsh) and got him out. Then when he got in trouble, we brought in another pitcher (Revesz) and he got out of it.
“Basically, it’s about picking each other up,” Pynn said.
The Sliders had raced out to a 3-0 first-inning lead when Trent Woolridge singled to open the game, then Porcaro executed a perfect hit-and-run. When Porcaro attempted to take second base on the throw to the infield, he was safe which allowed Woolridge to race home ahead of the tag.
A two-out RBI single by Guinane was followed by an error on a grounder by Peake that scored the third run.
Chillicothe received an RBI double from Kevin Zak in the third inning and another run on an error in the fourth inning to make it a 3-2 game before Sulcoski had a two-out run-scoring single to bump the Sliders’ lead back to two runs in the home half of the frame.
Until Kujawa’s clutch two-run single in the seventh inning tied the game, the Paints had struggled getting the big hit all evening. In all, the squad stranded 13 runners, including three in one inning and two in four other frames within the first seven innings.
“We had first and third, bases loaded, second and third...” Paints manager Greg Cyprett said. “You’ve got to cash in on some of those.
“(Slippery Rock) did a great job staying with it. You just have to do a better job with runners in scoring position,” Cyprett added.
“It still ages me about a year per inning,” Pynn joked. “That first inning got us going, though ... We have to capitalize on each mistake.”
And the Sliders could erase the memory of last Saturday and Sunday when they dropped 9-3 and 10-3 decisions at Chillicothe.
“They’re an exceptional ballclub and well-coached,” Pynn said. “They put it to us pretty good. It was nice come out and bounce back.”
