TOWN CRIER

Butler city council on Thursday:

• Awarded the city’s contract for 2012 street paving to Shields Asphalt Paving for $211,362.

• Awarded the city’s contract for 2012 curb replacement to Joe Palmieri Construction for $47,000.

• Approved payment of $4,045 to Keystone Ridge Designs and $375 to Sam’s Iron and Sheet Metal for the park on West New Castle Street, to be paid from the Shade Tree fund.

• Extended the cable television franchise given to Armstrong Utilities for cable, Internet and related services in the city between August 2021 and August 2026.

• Created a two-hour parking zone on the north side of West New Castle Street from Church Street to the first alley heading west, as well as a handicap-only parking space on the first spot west of the Church Street intersection, both on a 90-day trial basis.

• Created a no parking between signs area on Cleveland Street across from Stirling Avenue.

• Awarded demolition of buildings at 206-208 South Monroe St. to A.P. Wise Excavating for $12,400. The higher-than-usual cost, according to city building code official John Evans, is due to the building’s location, which is difficult to reach and near a high-tension wire, as well as the need for a safety fence around the site.

• Appointed Joe Bratkovich, a former city councilman, to the Butler Area Sewer Authority to fill the unexpired term of Van Peterson, which expires Dec. 31, 2013.

• Approved these payments to city pension funds: 2009 special levy; $453 to the Police Pension Fund, $623 to the Firefighter Pension Fund and $180 to the Officers and Employees Pension Fund. 2010 and 2011 state aid; $1,169 to the Police Pension Fund, $1,607 to the Firefighter Pension Fund and $464 to the Officers and Employees Pension Fund. Total money paid back was $4,498 due to reimbursement of funds for non-vested firefighters per their request.
