Stockert guides Moniteau past Gremlins, 10-0

Moniteau's Josh Stockert delivers a pitch Wednesday during the Warriors' 10-0 win over rival Karns City at Pullman Park.

Josh Stockert was in command.

Three Karns City pitchers were anything but.

The Moniteau baseball team took advantage of Stockert's economical afternoon on the mound and the Warriors drew nine walks at the plate in a 10-0, five-inning win over the Gremlins on senior night for both teams at Pullman Park Wednesday.

“It's a nice sendoff for our seniors,” said Moniteau coach Ross Martin. “But Karns City wasn't at their best. We know they are a better ball team than that.”

Stockert was at his best, however.

The senior right-hander gave up just two hits in five innings of work and allowed only three balls to leave the infield.

He also fielded his position quite well by making plays on three tappers back to the mound. On the third one, he threw out Nick Ganter from a sprawled position on the Pullman Park turf.

“It was another great game from him,” Martin said of Stockert. “All season long he has been on point. He's like Greg Maddux. He's not going to blow you away, but he hits his spots and fields his position.”

Stockert didn't need much run support, but he got plenty of it.

In the last meeting against Karns City, Stockert and Moniteau lost 1-0 to Derek Sadowski and the Gremlins. Sadowski, though, pitched six innings Tuesday against Keystone and was unavailable.

The usually reliable Ethan Williams struggled in his start for Karns City. Williams cruised through the first inning, but ran into heaps of trouble in the second frame.

After getting a ground-out to start the second, Williams gave up a single around five walks, including two free passes with the bases loaded as Moniteau grabbed a 3-0 lead.

Williams was pitching in a steady rain in the frame and bounced four pitches to the plate. He also had an offering get away from him and hit the netting above the backstop.

Williams also was trying to adjust to the new synthetic mound installed at Pullman Park earlier in the week.

“I don't know if it was the rain or the new mound or what,” said Karns City coach Randy Collins. “It was just one of those days.”

Brayden McCorry chased Williams in the third inning with a two-run triple. Freshman Matt Yough relieved Williams and didn't fare much better, walking two in the frame as Moniteau built its lead further to 7-0.

The Warriors added three more in the bottom of the fourth inning against Yough and the third Gremlin hurler of the day, Tyler Kepple. McCorry again had the big blow with a two-run single.

McCorry, a senior, finished the day 2-for-2 with three runs scored and four RBI.

In another peculiar stat line in the boxscore, Moniteau No. 9 hitter Trent Young was 0-for-2 with three RBI.

Despite its ugliness, it was a game Karns City wants to remember.

“I told them, 'Remember this feeling,'” Collins said. “'We will see this team in (the District 9 playoffs). Take care of it then.'”

Moniteau has been on a roll, winning seven in a row. It's six losses have come by seven runs.

“We always knew we were capable of this,” Martin said.
