BUTLER TWP — More than 500 students received their degrees from Butler County Community College on Tuesday night.

That's 560 new careers launched and 560 stories of pursuit of excellence, ranging from Anthony Katona of Butler, who on Tuesday became the first graduate of BC3's Scholar's Program, to a 74-year-old woman who earned her degree in graphic design.

“I'm sure, along the way, some of you thought this day would never come. Well, look at you now,” said 1974 BC3 graduate Mike Franko, who gave the distinguished alumni address.

“Be a service to your community and your country.”

Of the 560 Class of 2012 graduates, about 240 walked in Tuesday's ceremony, including eight military veterans and 21 students who earned more than one degree.

“The traditional route does not work for every student,” said honors graduate Mitchell Hortert.

“I took a two-year program and did it over four years, because that's what worked for me. BC3 celebrates the uniqueness of all individuals.”Keynote speaker Peter C. Varischetti, president of Varischetti Holdingsand a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, told graduates that passion and people are the keys to success, whether pursuing further education or entering the workforce.“Today, you have reached a special point in your lives,” he said.“Your ability to succeed will be dependent on the people you surround yourself with, and your own character.”A reception at Founders Hall followed the graduation ceremony in the Field House.
