Butler student wins 2nd in art competition

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A Butler Intermediate High School student was among the winners of this year’s Congressional “Artistic Discovery” High School Art Competition and was honored at a ceremony hosted by Edinboro University last week.

Second-place winner Lauren Spinneweber’s work, titled Dimension II, will be displayed in the Washington office of U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-3rd, for one year.

“The artwork displayed by this year’s contestants showed an exceptional level of imagination and skill,” Kelly said.

The winners were selected by two members of Edinboro University’s art department.

First place winners throughout the nation will have their work displayed in a corridor of the U.S. Capitol for one year and are invited to attend a national reception and viewing in Washington.

Madeline Beaumont of Harborcreek High School in Erie County took first place in last week’s ceremony for her work, The Most Interesting Frog in the World.

Third-place winner Caitlin Gleason of Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy also will have her work, Deva, hung in Kelly’s Washington office for one year.

Lacy Rzodkiewicz of Fort LeBoeuf High School earned an honorable mention for her piece, Knight.
