PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed fourth-round draft pick Alameda Ta'amu and fifth-round pick Chris Rainey.
Pittsburgh traded up in the fourth round to select Ta'amu with the 109th pick. The 6-foot-2, 348-pound nose tackle out of Washington is expected to back up veteran Casey Hampton this season.
Ta'amu recorded 109 tackles with 7Z\x sacks and 16½ tackles for loss during his last two seasons with the Huskies. He was an All-Pac 12 Conference honorable mention as a junior and a senior.
Rainey ran for 861 yards and two scores and caught 31 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns in his senior year at Florida in 2011. He is expected to see time as a kick returner and as a third-down specialist.
OXFORD, Ohio — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has graduated from Miami University in southwest Ohio, about nine years after leaving for the NFL.The university says the 30-year-old Roethlisberger received his bachelor's degree in education and joined nearly 600 students during Sunday's commencement at the campus in Oxford. His wife, parents and grandmother attended.
SAN DIEGO — San Diego Chargers chaplain Shawn Mitchell says Junior Seau's family is revisiting its decision to donate the former NFL linebacker's brain for research into football-related injuries.Mitchell said Sunday that the family, which is of Samoan descent, is consulting with a group of elders on a number of matters.He says it doesn't necessarily mean that the family won't donate Seau's brain for research.
ANAHEIM, Calif. — That day off sure did Albert Pujols some good.The $240 million slugger finally hit a home run for the Los Angeles Angels, ending the longest power drought of his career Sunday in a 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.Pujols connected in the fifth inning for a two-run shot, his first AL homer and the 446th overall.
