Tornado baseball still in hunt

Butler's baseball team remained in the thick of the WPIAL Quad A playoff race with a 10-2 win at Fox Chapel Friday afternoon.

Mick Fennell pitched a complete game for the victory, giving up just the two runs on four hits while striking out 10 and walking just one.

Colin Williamson paced the Golden Tornado on offense with two singles, a double and three runs batted in.

“We were consistent and had a good approach at the plate today,” Butler coach Todd Erdos said of his team's 11 hits. “We also received good fielding and pitching.

“In all three areas, we played well,” he added.

Both of Fox Chapel's runs came on Joe Palumbo's home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Butler and North Allegheny are tied for second place in Section 1 with records of 7-4. Shaler is right behind them at 6-5.

Only the top three teams in the section are guaranteed a postseason berth.

Elsewhere:

• Mars' Nathan Furl and Nick Comport combined on a four-hit shutout of Highlands as the Planets prevailed on the road, 4-0.

• Sean White struck out seven in seven innings of work and also had an RBI single to lead Slippery Rock to a 5-2 win over Meadville.
