Barclay hopes to be drafted
CRANBERRY TWP — Don Barclay has done all he can do. Now comes the waiting game.
The Seneca Valley High product and recent graduate of West Virginia University hopes to be one of the 224 players taken in the 2012 NFL Draft, which runs Thursday through Saturday.
The 6-foot-4, 305-pound Barclay started at left tackle for the Mountaineers the last three seasons, earning All-Big East Conference First-Team honors in 2011.
Several teams have been in contact with Barclay's agent, Joe Linta, including the Steelers, Browns, Broncos, Texans, Ravens and Dolphins.
“They're asking about his character,” Linta said. “Don's a guy who you can rely on every day. With him, you don't have to worry about any of the off-the-field stuff.”
“It's been crazy,” said Barclay. “I've been told I could be a late-round pick or a free agent. It's hard to say what the coaches and scouts are looking at.
“I have a strong work ethic and good knowledge of the game. Hopefully, it will pay off for me.”
Barclay helped West Virginia to an overall record of 10-3 last season, which ended with a lopsided victory over Clemson in the Orange Bowl.
“West Virginia played Clemson and LSU last season, two very good teams, and Don dominated both of them,” said Linta.
Barclay, who graduated with a degree in business management, was invited to play in the Casino Del Sol College All-Star Game, held Jan. 16 in Tucson, Ariz.
Dressing for the East squad, he saw 40-plus snaps at left tackle in a 24-21 loss.
“It was good competition,” said Barclay. “We had a tough week of practice and it was a great experience.”
Since mid January, Barclay has been working out at Power Train in Washington County.
“Four days every week, I do a lot of lifting, but also have been working on speed and conditioning,” he said. “I've done everything I can to put myself in a position to be drafted.”
Barclay hopes to spend the draft days with family and friends.
“I'm just going to live life normally,” he said. “I think I'm going golfing Friday with my dad and brother. Saturday, I'll just be hanging out with my family and my fiancee's family.”
Linta is confident that Barclay will land with an NFL team, whether it's through the draft or not.
“If he's not drafted, he will be a coveted guy,” he said. “There would be at least a dozen teams interested in signing him as a free agent.”
Even so, Barclay would love to hear his name called this weekend.
“All I want is a chance to prove myself,” he said.
