Tornado bats blitz P-R, 14-5
Alex Ziegler had four singles and Colin Williamson added two singles and a double as the Butler baseball team pounded out 19 hits in a 14-5 win at Pine-Richland Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Tornado (7-0, 2-0) scored six runs in the first inning against the Rams (4-2, 1-1) to help starting pitcher Colin McKee get the win.
The senior right-hander sruck out eight and walked three.
Mick Fennell added a single and a triple for Butler.
Dalton Koebler also had a big game at the plate for the Golden Tornado with a double and two singles.
Pine-Richland closed the gap to 8-5 with a five-run fifth inning, but the Golden Tornado pulled away with four runs in the top of the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh.
Butler will have a week off before it hosts Shaler April 11.
In other action:
• C.J. Weigand homered, doubled and drove in two runs, but Mars fell to section foe Indiana 9-4.
Nick Comfort got the loss, but struck out five in two innings of work for the Planets (4-2, 1-1).
Derek Shields homered for Indiana (1-4, 1-1).
• Gavin Herald and Josh Doody each doubled, but Grove City fell to Sharon 5-3.
Torin Smith also had two hits for the Eagles (1-3).
Winning pitcher Geno Merolillo and Joe Tomko homered as Sharon remained unbeaten.
• Seven errors doomed Slippery Rock to a 14-0 loss to Warren in five innings.
The Rockets (1-3) managed just four singles against the Dragons.
