BUTLER TWP — Butler County Community College professor Chris Calhoun along with colleague Ryan Walt, boating and watercraft safety manager of the state Fish and Boat Commission, gave a presentation at the 2012 International Boating and Water Safety Summit in San Diego, Calif., March 4 to 7.

Calhoun and Walt had two presentations on the Pennsylvania Water Rescue Program, highlighting the state training program.

The summit, hosted by the National Safe Boating Council and the National Water Safety Congress, promotes training, awareness and networking for professionals in boating and water safety.

Calhoun is a professor in the humanities and social sciences division at BC3 and coordinator of the park and recreational management program. He also is the lead water rescue instructor trainer for the state Fish and Boat Commission.

MSA sells military helmet businessCRANBERRY TWP — MSA has decided to let go of its military helmet business.The company announced that it is selling its helmet business to an undisclosed buyer in Newport, Vt.MSA expects to complete the sale within 45 days.The Butler County business entered the ballistic helmet market in 2003 following the company’s 2002 acquisition of French helmet manufacturer CFG Gallet, and subsequent contract from the U.S. Army.

Zelie man joins Chief Oil & GasWARRENDALE — Chief Oil & Gas announced that Sam Fragale has been hired as senior vice president of operations in its Marcellus Shale natural gas region.Fragale joins Chief from the Phillips Production of Warrendale, where he was senior vice president of operations until its sale to Exxon Mobil.Fragale serves on several boards for state organizations, including the Technical Advisory Board to the Department of Environmental Protection.Fragale has a bachelor’s in petroleum engineering from West Virginia University.He lives in Zelienople with his family.

DEP, engineers to host meetingHARRISBURG — The state Department of Environmental Protection and the Engineers Society of Western Pennsylvania are organizing a statewide brownfields conference in October in Pittsburgh.“Brownfields redevelopment is an important policy priority for us, and for good reason. By remediating old industrial sites, we provide for both environmental protection and for new job growth from rejuvenated communities,” DEP Secretary Mike Krancer said.Before this, the DEP and ESWP each held separate state conferences, but the groups are working to bring the best of both events to the October conference.To learn about brownfields redevelopment in Pennsylvania, visit www.dep.state.pa.us or call 717-783-1566.

Rep. Kelly gets chamber awardWASHINGTON — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce presented U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-3rd, with its Spirit of Enterprise Award for his support of pro-jobs, pro-growth policies during the first session of the 112th Congress.The chamber’s award is given annually to members of Congress based on key business issues outlined in the chamber publication, “How They Voted.” Members who support the chamber’s position on at least 70 percent of those votes qualify to receive the award.Kelly of Butler maintained a 100 percent rating with the chamber this year and collectively holds the same ranking during his tenure in Congress.To view a list of the 2011 Spirit of Enterprise recipients, visit the website www.uschamber.com/soe.
