Rock baseball bows to Winona

Winona State University converted five walks, two Slippery Rock University errors and two hits into seven fifth-inning runs in a 10-3 victory at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.

SRU’s Nick McCowin tossed 3 2/3 no-hit innings and four shutout innings before the big fifth inning.

The Rock (6-10-1) collected 11 hits in the game, including a 3-for-5 outing by Will Kengor and Ben Bechtol and John Shaffer adding two hits apiece.

Winona State (5-6) is the defending NCAA Division II national runner-up.

SoftballButler graduate Jenna Geibel went a combined 4-for-6 with a home run and two RBI in a 4-3 win over Minnesota-Moorhead and a 4-0 decision over Minnesota-Duluth at the Rebel Spring games in Kissimmee, Fla. Thursday.Geibel went 3-for-3 in Game 1 to help Ashley Knight, who picked up the win on the mound.In the second game, Geibel belted a two-run homer and Kirsten Brant (Knoch) also homered for SRU (3-4), who also received a one-hitter and a pair of singles by Shaylee Ianno.

Women’s LacrosseMidfielders Casey Quinn and Lauren Laubach each scored three goals to lead The Rock to a season-opening 15-11 win over Belmont Abbey College at Queens University in Charlotte, N.C., Thursday.It’s the third straight season SRU has opened the season with a win.
