It's never too early for books

“Thank You Bear,” books by Greg Foley are recommended for preschoolers.

Peter Bess, youth service librarian for Butler Public Library, believes it's never too early to read to children.

“Babies can hear in the womb,” Bess said.

For toddlers or preschool children, Bess recommends that parents choose books with good pictures.

For example, the Association for Library Service to Children chooses the Caldecott Medal winner annually for a children's book with exceptionally good illustrations, he said. The winning book, and runners up, display the award on their covers.

Bess' book suggestions follow.

“From Head to Toe,” by Eric Carle“Rhyming Dust Bunnies,” by Jan Thomas“Time to Sleep, Sheep the Sheep!,” By Mo Willems“The Wide-Mouthed Frog, a pop-up book,” by Keith Faulkner“The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round,” pop-up book, classic nursery rhyme
