Summit upset in double OT

Missed free throws prove costly in 90-86 loss to Northgate

DORMONT — In a game that had just about everything, it was the ordinary and the mundane that sunk the Summit Academy basketball team.

“Turnovers. Foul shots. Layups,” lamented Knights' coach Art McCray.

Those three areas haunted Summit Academy (17-5) throughout regulation and two wild overtime periods in a 90-86 loss to Northgate in the WPIAL Class AA playoffs at Keystone Oaks High School Wednesday night.

Too many turnovers (nearly 25 of them), poor foul shooting (the Knights were a mere 10-of-23 from the line), and missed layups (Summit shot well from everywhere but under the basket) all conspired against the Knights.

The foul shooting in particular was troublesome.

Summit Academy was 4-of-12 from the line in the fourth quarter and the two overtime periods.

It helped keep Northgate (14-10) alive.

The Knights had a golden opportunity to snatch a victory at the end of the first overtime.

With the score tied at 71-71 with three seconds remaining in the first overtime and both teams well into the double bonus, Mac Quinn missed a layup for Northgate and the rebound was pulled down by Summit's Tyerell Wyche.

Quinn slapped several times at the ball that was held snug against Wyche's chest and was whistled for a foul with .6 seconds on the clock.

Wyche, though, missed both free throws to send the game to a second overtime.

“That was a tough foul call to make,” said Northgate coach Perry Harrop. “I guess everything happens for a reason.”

Summit Academy was able to force the first overtime thanks to Sunny Munn.

Northgate had trailed 59-53 with a little more than a minute remaining in regulation, but took advantage of poor free throw shooting by the Knights and a huge 3-pointer from guard Matt Lee to take a 63-60 lead with 10.9 seconds remaining in regulation.

Munn, though, calmly drained a 3-pointer from the left corner with 1.2 seconds remaining. It was his first shot of the night.

That was just a small sliver of the craziness in this game:

n Summit Academy had two free throws wiped out because of lane violations.

n Summit's Rashon Boon scored all of his team's points in the first overtime (eight) and Rakim Reedy scored 12 of the Knights' 15 points in the second OT.

n Northgate's Dave Natale was 7-of-16 shooting — all 3-point shots — for 21 points.

n Northgate's 6-foot-5 senior Jon Girvin scored 24 points and added 21 rebounds.

n Summit Academy blocked 13 shots.

Ultimately, though, the game ended like any other in the WPIAL playoffs: with one happy team and one profoundly sad one.

“I'd hate to be in that other locker room,” Harrop said. “I've been on that other side, too.”

Northgate built a 10-point lead in the final overtime, but even that wasn't safe against the Knights, who showed a penchant all game for scoring points in bunches.

After falling behind by eight at the half, the Knights erased that deficit in the first two minutes of the third quarter.

Summit also went on a 7-0 run that covered a mere 45 seconds to take the 58-53 lead late.

Reedy nearly brought the Knights back in the second overtime with three long, off-balance 3-pointers with a defender in his face. Summit trailed by just two points late.

“We weren't surprised by that,” McCray said. “What surprised me was we didn't make our foul shots and we missed a lot of layups. We left a lot of areas on the court. That's what happens when you leave yourself open like that.”

Summit Academy had five players reach double digits, led by Reedy with 26.

“You're not always going to get what you want in life,” McCray said. “It's gonna hurt. At the same time, they realize we gave this game away. Northgate did a lot of great things, but we can't say we didn't put ourselves in position to close this thing out and finish the game.”
