IUP edges SRU in men's hoops
Marcel Souberbielle scored five points in the final 30 seconds, including a 3-pointer to give Indiana (Pa.) a lead it would not surrender, to lift the Crimson Hawks to a 66-63 PSAC-West men’s basketball victory Saturday.
John Bayardelle drilled a 3-pointer with 1:01 remaining to tie the game at 61, but The Rock (16-8, 13-7) could not take the lead.
Devin Taylor’s potential 3-point attempt with five seconds left was off the mark.
Taylor finished with a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds while Chaquille Pratt added 12 points and five rebounds, Tabari Perry had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Ashton Smith led IUP with 23 points while Souberbielle and Julian Sanders had 13 points apiece.
Women’s BasketballThe Rock dropped its 10th consecutive contest Saturday to IUP 70-45.D’Asia Chambers led SRU (5-19, 2-18) for the second consecutive game with 14 points while Jasmine Cooper added six points and a team-high five rebounds and Danielle Smith added six points.IUP (19-5, 15-5) was paced by Sarah Pastorek and Amy Fairman, who had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
BaseballOne day after pounding out 17 hits in a season-opening doubleheader sweep of Ohio Valley University Saturday, The Rock managed just seven hits in two games Sunday, losses to Wheeling Jesuit in Chillicothe, Ohio.Carter Haponski had a single in a 3-2 Game 1 loss Sunday and a double in the 6-3, nine-inning nightcap. Matt Accardi had a two-run double and RBI single in Game 2 for SRU.On Saturday, Lou Trivino pitched a complete game and Brandon Myers had a home run and two RBIs in a 4-2 Game 1 victory.Zach Jeney picked up the win after tossing four relief innings in the second game. Haponski added a pair of hits in each game.
Track and FieldSRU’s Ethan Geisler (Slippery Rock), Trevor Foley, Kevin Jewel and Hunter Williams (Seneca Valley) teamed up to break the school record in the 1,600-meter relay at the Kent State Tune-Up Saturday.The foursome finished third in the race with a time of 3:17.94 to break the record, which had been set in 1995. The time also met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.Williams also placed seventh in the 200 (22.45) while Cameron Daugherty was second in the pole vault (4.85 meters) while David Caldwell (Butler) was eighth (4.40).In the women’s meet, Sandy Kakraba broke the school record in the weight throw (15.41 meters), which was good for 10th place.Kim Stitt was second in the triple jump (11.18 meters) as was Kara Styles in the mile run (5:12.75). Katelyn Wetzel (Butler) was fourth in the 200 (25.80) and eighth in the 60 (7.97).
