Early Knoch-out
WEXFORD — Beaver got on a run — and ran away.
The Bobcats trailed Knoch 5-4 with 2:52 left in the first quarter Saturday afternoon before closing the first half with a 31-2 run in a WPIAL Class AAA girls basketball playoff game Saturday afternoon at North Allegheny High School.
The Knights (9-13) never recovered and suffered a 62-28 loss, ending their season with a six-game losing streak.
“That streak definitely played a factor today,” Knoch coach Sean O'Donnell said. “Once Beaver put together a little run against us, instead of thinking we can get past this, our girls were thinking, ‘Oh no.'
“You could see it in their body language.”
Knoch turned the ball over 27 times on the day, 12 of those coming during the ill-fated 31-2 run.
Beaver (13-9) won three of its final four regular season games — including a 50-46 victory at New Castle — just to get into the playoffs. The Bobcats play in the same section as girls hoop stalwarts Hopewell, Blackhawk and New Castle.
“When you're going through the season, playing in a section like that stinks,” Beaver coach Greg Huston said. “But if you do survive and make the playoffs, it gets you ready.
“We came into this game battle tested and I think it showed.”
The Bobcats overcame the loss of junior point guard Elizabeth Dragonjac — who sprained her knee in practice Friday — to win easily. Lexi Posset, a freshman, ran the point Saturday.
“We thought we might have caught a bit of a break, them having to play a freshman there, but that certainly wasn't the case,” O'Donnell said.
Senior forward Emily Kondracki led Beaver with 20 points and six rebounds. Posset had 13 points and four boards, Eleanor Neeley 12 points and four rebounds, Aly Dehart 11 points and six boards.
“Lexi plays about half the game normally as our sixth man, so she's used to the competition,” Huston said. “She did a nice job stepping into the lineup.”
No Knoch player reached double figures, but sophomore Celina Sanks had seven points and 10 rebounds. Samantha Logan scored seven points and senior Amber Henzel came off the bench to snare six rebounds.
Trailing 48-13 entering the fourth quarter, Knoch's girls rallied to win that final period, 15-14. Beaver played its top-seven players until late in the game.
“We got beaten up in a couple of games this year, but our girls never quit,” O'Donnell said. “That's all you can ask for as a coach.
“We've gotten to the playoffs two straight years now. Hopefully, these underclassmen will work hard on their game in the offseason so maybe we can carry this a step or two further.”
Henzel, Brooke Armahizer, Katy Miller and Rachel Neff played their final games as seniors for the Knights.
