Philip Lehnerd Jr.
Philip H. Lehnerd Jr., 90, of Butler died Saturday afternoon at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Butler on Nov. 10, 1921, he was a son of Philip H. and Theresa McGowan Lehnerd Sr.
He was the last member of his immediate family, as he was preceded in death by five brothers, Wendle, Al, Ralph, Robert and Edward Lehnerd; and three sisters, Catherine Portman, Agnes Eury and Clara Young.
Phil was a retired postal clerk. He had worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years, retiring Feb. 29, 1980. For many years he also had served as an officer in the Butler County Postal Employees Federal Credit Union.
A decorated veteran, he had proudly served his country during World War II as a staff sergeant with the 12th Armored Division. He was wounded in Germany and was awarded the Purple Heart medal and Combat Infantry Badge along with several other ribbons. He served again with the 25th Infantry Division in Korea during the Korean War.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 117 in Butler and the 12th Armor Division Association, and he attended many of its reunions. He also was a member of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Butler.
Both he and his wife, Ann were inducted in the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame by Gov. Tom Ridge for having voted in every election for 50 years. He was recently honored again as his voting record covered 60 continuous years.
He married Ann Lawrence Lehnerd in Philadelphia on Aug. 16, 1947, and she passed away June 7, 2011. His daughter, Ann Miller, died Aug. 13, 2007.
Surviving are a son, Philip H. Lehnerd, III of Butler; a grandson, Drew C. Miller, and numerous nieces and nephews.
<B>LEHNERD</B> — Friends of Philip H. Lehnerd Jr., who died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, will be received at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Parish Family Catholic Church, 127 Franklin St., Butler. Interment will be at St. Peter Cemetery, Butler.Members of St. Peters Women's Council will recite the Rosary at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
