Dynamic in defeat

Knoch's Alex Strezeski (11) drives the ball on Hampton defender David Klodowski (24) during the Knights' 51-48 basketball loss to the section-leading Talbots Friday night.

JEFFERSON TWP — No matter how many times Hampton threatened to pull away, Knoch refused to back down.

But in the end, the Knights' last-second 3-pointer rimmed out and Hampton escaped Knoch High School with a 51-48 Section 1-AAA boys basketball victory Friday night.

The Talbots (15-3, 10-0) didn't trail after the first quarter, but the Knights (8-10, 6-4) never allowed the Talbots to stretch their advantage beyond nine.

Knoch made life difficult on the Talbots, who demolished the Knights 78-38 on Jan. 3.

“We've definitely gotten better,” Knoch coach Josh Shoop said. “What I told the kids, though, is now I know they can play this well. So, I expect this from them every night.”

“Knoch has improved since we played them last time,” said Hampton coach Joe Lafko. “Knoch came out and played hard and played physical. We were able to hang on and win the basketball game.”

Five straight points from Ryan Luther to start the fourth quarter gave Hampton its largest lead of the game at 40-31.

Later in the frame, the Knights reeled off a 6-0 run, capped by a Tavita Lio steal and layup to make it 43-40.

“Defense is what got us back into the game,” said Shoop.

Hampton pushed its advantage to 48-42 with a minute to play, before one final push from Knoch.

Lio knocked down a 3-pointer on a dish from Michael Schenck, which ignited the crowd and cut the deficit in half with 48.6 seconds left in the game.

The Knights had the ball within three, but Collin Luther came away with a steal and fed Ryan Luther for a bucket and foul. He missed the free throw, but Hampton had a 50-45 edge.

Lio made that cushion a lot less comfortable when he took a pass from Austin Miller and drained another 3-pointer to make it 50-48 with 23 seconds to go.

Knoch's relentless defensive pressure forced Hampton into a turnover, as Schenck tip-toed the sideline and saved the ball from going out of bounds.

Lio eventually gained control and sliced toward the basket with less than 10 seconds to play. However, he couldn't finish inside and Hampton's Mark Pilarski snared the rebound and was immediately fouled with 4.9 seconds remaining.

After missing the first free throw, Pilarski drilled the second and Hampton, which wasn't in the bonus, fouled Miller as he crossed midcourt.

With time for one last shot, the inbounds pass went to Dakota Bruggeman at the top of the key, but the junior's shot glanced off the rim and Hampton breathed a sigh of relief.

“He's a capable shooter and he was wide open,” said Shoop of Bruggeman. “The ball just didn't bounce the right way.”

Bruggeman is typically a threat in the post, but Hampton smothered Knoch's outside shooters.

“One of those post guys had to step out and I would not want anyone else with the ball but Dakota,” said Shoop. “That was a good opportunity.”

It was a heart-wrenching defeat, but Shoop was encouraged by his team's performance.

“Our kids were focused tonight. They worked real hard,” Shoop said. “Sometimes, you work as hard as you can and it doesn't work out the way you want.”

After cruising to victory in their previous meeting, Lafko knew it wouldn't be so easy on Knoch's home floor.

“I've been through a lot of these games ... so you just don't know what's going to happen,” said Lafko.

The Talbots now own a three-game lead in the section with four to play. Knoch is in third.

Ryan Luther posted a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds for Hampton. Collin Luther added 16 points, three assists and three steals.

Lio led a balanced scoring effort from Knoch with 11 points. Marc Vaughan added 10 and Bruggeman tallied nine points and seven boards. Schenck had eight points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
