SRU wins at California with buzzer-beater, 54-53

CALIFORNIA — Senior guard John Bayardelle scored on a layup with less than a second remaining in the game to lift the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team to a 54-53 win at California (Pa.) Wednesday night.

The Rock (10-5, 7-4) trailed 40-26 with 14 minutes left.

Senior forward Devin Taylor contributed 14 points and nine rebounds to the win. Torrance Timothy added 12 points.

SRU sank only nine of 44 shots from the field in the first 32 minutes before catching fire late. The Rock hit nine of its final 13 shots from the floor.

The host Vulcans (9-8, 6-5) had a 39-38 edge in rebounding, becoming the first team to out-rebound Slippery Rock this season.

Steve Sweich led California with 14 points.

SRU is tied for fourth in the PSAC West with Edinboro, which comes to Morrow Field House for a 3 p.m. tip-off Saturday.

California 67, SRU 54 (women) — Danielle Smith scored 14 points and D’Asia Chambers added 12 points and six rebounds, but The Rock (5-10, 2-9) fell to defeat.Jasmine Cooper scpred 10 points for The Rock. Amy Johns paced the Vulcans (10-5, 7-4) with 20 points.Unbeaten and third-ranked Edinboro faces SRU at 1 p.m. Saturday at Morrow Field House.
