First of all the South Side was not always a slum.I don't know how old you are but that is an untrue statement.The south Side was wonderful place to grow up when I was young.It was a blue collar community with many wonderful ethnic residents.I resent that remark and I am sure many of my Italian neighbors and friends that I grew up with do also.I moved away in 1970.I really do not know how "THE SIDE" is today, but saying "ALWAYS WAS" a slum is wrong.
