Butler seeks soccer coach
BUTLER TWP — Butler High School's girls soccer team is looking for its fifth head coach in seven years.
Csaba Feher has resigned the position after two years for personal reasons. The Golden Tornado were 3-30 under Feher, including 1-16 last season.
Since Marlene Peoples resigned as Butler's coach following the 2006 season, the Tornado girls soccer team has been run by Nicole Hilderbrand, Sara Lettrich and Feher.
“It's a concern,” Butler athletic director Bill Mylan admitted of the coaching turnover. “Our two sports programs that have struggled in recent years are girls soccer and football.
“In both instances, lack of coaching stability has to be looked at as a big reason for that.”
The Tornado girls soccer team played in the state championship game as recently as 2003, losing a 1-0 decision to Owen J. Roberts to finish a 21-3-2 season.
Mylan said the coaching opening will be advertised within the school district, then outside. He said Butler hopes to get a person hired by early spring.
An athletic committee is being formed by the school board — and will include at least four school board members and an administrative member of the Butler Area School District — to assess coaches' performances and serve as a liaison for coaches and parents.
“We need a better assessment system of our coaches and this will accomplish that,” first-year school board member Bill Halle said. “Too often, a crowd shows up at a board meeting, complaining and screaming about a coach, and that coach is gone.
“We don't want that here. Coaches need time to develop a program. Constant changeover never works in any sport.”
Mylan said all of the board members will be invited to participate on the athletic committee, which is expected to be in place by February.
“If parents have a complaint or problem with a coach, the committee can serve as a sounding board,” Halle said. “The coach would have his or her day as well and the situation will be worked out.
“We have a very active and involved board right now and that's good to see.”
Mylan said he welcomes the arrival of an athletic committee.
“We always need to work hard to achieve stability with our coaches and this is a positive step,” he said.
