Scherer

Dan Mast Scherer, 88, of Saxonburg passed away Dec. 2, 2011, at Good Samaritan Hospice, surrounded by his wife and children.

Born Nov. 11, 1923, in Greentown, Ind., Dan was the son of the late Morris Scherer and Blanche Mast Scherer. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Scherer Shull of Kokomo, Ind.

He was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Cabot and was a veteran of World War II, during which he served honorably with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific on the U.S.S. Chauncey.

Dan retired in 1984 after 28 years with North Pittsburgh Telephone Company as a network engineer manager.

Dan was an avid fisherman who, after a good catch, liked to host a fish fry for family and friends. He often could be seen running errands around Saxonburg in his truck with his beloved dog riding shotgun.

What Dan enjoyed most of all was being surrounded by his family and friends. He will be remembered forever by his wife of 58 years, Ellen; his children, Teresa (Thomas) Peters, Patricia (Robert) Durand, Michael (Danielle) Scherer and Kathleen (Troy) Lindsey; his seven grandchildren, Tyler Peters, Kyle Durand, Casey Durand, Ian Lindsey, Alec Lindsey, Walter Scherer and Claire Lindsey, who called him “Pappy Dan;” his sister-in-law, Miriam Gemperle of Kansas City, Mo.; his nephew and niece, Ed Shull of Havre de Grace, Md., and Melinda Enstrom of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; and also Finn, the last in a long line of canine companions.
