Butler School District collects money, books

BUTLER TWP — The Butler School District participated in several community service projects in November and December.

They included:

• The second annual Empty Bowls event Dec. 15 at the intermediate school raised $1,250 for hunger-fighting organizations. Participants donated $10 for student-made ceramic bowls filled with homemade soup from the district’s art department.

St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, The Lighthouse Foundation and the Loaves and Fishes Food Cupboard, all in Butler, will receive $416 each.

• The district collected more than 871 books during its National Education Week Book Drive in November. Books were collected in each of 11 elementary schools and taken to the junior high school.

Donations were sent to Family Pathways and Family Services, both in Butler County, and to the BAIR Foundation in New Wilmington, Pa. Books also will be sent to the Center for Community Resources, the Salvation Army and Lifesteps, all of Butler, and to several doctors’ offices.

• The district raised more than $1,200 during its National Ataxia Foundation jeans day in November. Ataxia, which affects about 150,000 people nationwide, is a rare, degenerative neurological disorder that is often fatal. Children and young adults often are victims of the disease, which has no cure.
