Raiders pick up matinee win, 61-51
JACKSON TWP — When things are going well for the Seneca Valley boys basketball team, the Raiders can make life difficult for their opponent.
Perry Traditional Academy found that out the hard way.
SV was on the receiving end of 29 Commodore turnovers as the Raiders went in to the holiday break with a 61-51 home win in a rare weekday matinee on Wednesday.
Unlike the Commodores, Seneca Valley took care of the basketball, committing just 12 turnovers, including just six after the first period.
“We're an inexperienced team, but we're learning,” said Perry coach Marco Corona. “There were times today when we were running good, solid, smooth stuff. We did make mistakes and we can do better. The kids are trying and that's the most important thing.”
The game, which served as a school assembly, began at 1 p.m.
“Playing in front of the student body, it was an excellent atmosphere,” said Raiders' coach Victor Giannotta. “I thought we came out with energy and enthusiasm.”
Perry's Darelle Carson completed a conventional 3-point play with 2:26 left in the third period, slicing SV's lead to 41-38.
The Raiders then went on a 10-2 run that lasted well into the final quarter. Junior forward Ryan McCauley contributed six points to the spurt.
The Commodores' last gasp came when Paul Currington and Trevon Webb drained back-to-back 3-pointers, bringing Perry to within 57-48 with 1:34 remaining. But the visitors got no further.
The Raiders (3-3) were led by Alex Maxfield's 14 points. Chad Albert and McCauley both scored 10, the latter coming off the bench to do so.
“Ryan gives us steady minutes and goes at 110 percent in everything he does,” said Giannotta.
Six different players scored for the Raiders in the first quarter, after which SV held a slim 16-14 lead.
Perry remained in the game, but had trouble dealing with SV's height. The Raiders' smallest starter was 6-foot-2 Maxfield.
Seneca won the battle for rebounds 36-29.
“We tried to go man-to-man at first, but that took our rebounders out of position,” said Corona. “We switched to zone, but that's just not our forte. Seneca Valley is so long. They're the tallest team we've faced.”
Don Miller led the Commodores (1-4) with 13 points.
The Raiders will face Northgate at the Mars Holiday Tournament on Tuesday.
