Turnpike will get charging stations

HARRISBURG — Electric car charging stations are coming to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, transportation officials said Wednesday.

The state Department of Environmental Protection announced a $1 million grant to Car Charging Group LLC. The company will install charging stations at 17 turnpike service plazas.

Two kinds of charging stations will be installed in three phases. There will be Level II charging stations, which can charge a car in about four hours, and Level III charging stations, which can charge a car in about 20 minutes.

“Pennsylvania has been — and will continue to be — a nationwide leader on energy issues in all sectors,” DEP Secretary Mike Krancer said.
