Hepler sparks Freeport
Cole Hepler tallied two goals in the final 4:18 to lift the Freeport hockey team to a 3-2 victory over South Park in PIHL Class A action Thursday at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon.
Tyler Bonitsky also scored while Brendon Zack and Gregory Newman added assists.
Cody Lee made 18 saves for Freeport.
Mars 5, Thomas Jefferson 2 — A four-goal first period keyed the Planets past the Jaguars in this Class A game at BladeRunners in Bethel Park.Joe Bender recorded two goals and an assist while Nick Blaney, Bryan Thomas and Rusty Miller also scored.Austin Heakins added a pair of assists for Mars, which also received 18 saves from Alex Stepke.Mars (7-0) will host Serra Catholic Tuesday at BladeRunners in Warrendale.
Upper St. Clair 7, Butler 3 — Jake Tomasovic netted two goals and Tanner Gilliland one goal and one assist for the Tornado in this Class AAA contest at the Ice Castle.
Kittanning 10, Knoch 3 — Mike Rykaczewski registered two goals and Nick Brubach added one goal to lead the Knights at the Belmont Complex in Class A action.
BowlingButler's high school bowling team opened the season Wednesday night with commanding 7-0 victories at New Castle.Jacob Cookson led the Golden Tornado boys with a 627 series, including games of 184, 197 and 246. Brayden Troyan contributed a 600 series as well, including games of 246 and 211.Other top scorers for the boys were Cody Rosenbauer (206), Matthew Blose (203, 182), Brandt Fleming (188, 198) and Austin Gagliardi (193).On the girls side, Nicole Balk put together a 611 series with scores of 232, 167 and 212. Megan Paul had games of 178, 214 and 191 for a 583 series.Other top scorers included team captain Brea Suchonic (160, 163, 197), Autumn Hepler (171, 191, Ciara Pellegrini (188), Kelly Bintrim (173, 170) and Kelli Sherge (166).Butler faces Mars Wednesday at Family Bowlaway.
