Martha Anna McClelland Miller, 98, formerly of Portersville, passed away Thursday in Presbyterian Senior Care, Oakmont, where she lived since February 2005.

She was born July 22, 1913, in Polk, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Frederick and Arvilla Vincent McClelland.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Portersville. She was honored in 2003-2004 by President George W. Bush with a certificate and pin for volunteering more than 2,000 hours in the St. Cloud, Fla., Presbyterian Church Thriftee Center.

She was a registered nurse. During her first job, she was the head nurse at the former Mercer Cottage Hospital in Mercer. She later became the school nurse at different buildings in the Slippery Rock School District, where she retired after 25 years.

She enjoyed reading, traveling, doing needle work and working on crafts.

She is survived by one daughter, Marlene Miller Smithers and her husband, Charles, of Pittsburgh; one sister, Caroline “Dolly” Berry of New Castle; and one sister-in-law, June McClelland of Grove City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wayland “Bill” Miller, who passed away in 1983; one brother, Jack McClelland; and one sister, Jean Shearer.
