SRU men pick up road win

The Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team scored 18 of the final 24 points to hand host Millersville University a 66-56 loss Sunday afternoon.

The two teams were deadlocked at 50-50 with 5:30 remaining in the game when The Rock went on a run to close out the contest.

Torrance Timothy hit a 3-pointer to spur the 14-2 run that helped SRU to its second win in three games this season.

Rock senior point guard Jon Valeriano hit 6-of-6 free throws in the final minutes to secure the victory. He finished with a team-leading 13 points.

Timothy, a junior, and junior guard Aubin Reeves each added 11 points.

Junior guard John Bayardelle and senior forward Devin Taylor each added nine points. Taylor also had 10 rebounds for The Rock.

Grove City 59, Pitt-Greensburg 58 — The Wolverines had to hold off a late charge to eke out this win Sunday at the Geneva College Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament.Senior center Kris Verderber led Grove City (2-1) with 14 points.

Women’s BasketballSenior forward Danielle Smith scored 13 points and also added seven rebounds, but the Slippery Rock University women’s basketball team was routed by Millersville 81-49 Sunday afternoon.Millersville went on a 24-5 run in the first half to open up a big lead.The Rock (1-3) shot 22 percent from the floor and hit just 1-of-10 shots from 3-point range.

North Carolina Wesleyan 56, Grove City College 47 — Seneca Valley graduate and Wolverines senior guard Megan Gebrosky scored 17 points, but Grove City could not capture a win in the championship game of the Frostburg State Jim Crawley Tournament Saturday.Gebrosky earned a spot on the all-tournament team for the Wolverines (1-2).
