Rock spikers bow in tourney

Slippery Rock University’s women’s volleyball team was unable to upset second-seeded Wheeling Jesuit Thursday, falling 3-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Tournament at California (Pa.) University.

Kristy Lake led The Rock with 12 kills and Janna Reilly added 23 assists.

Women’s BasketballJasmine Cooper had 23 points and 16 rebounds and Danielle Smith added 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead SRU to a 67-59 victory over Ursuline Wednesday.Paris Thomas added nine points, nine assists, five rebounds and four steals and Sherita Stanley eight rebounds for SRU (1-1).• Jacque Diaz scored 35 points, including two free throws with six seconds remaining to lead BC3 to a 69-67 victory over Garrett County (Md.) Wednesday.The Pioneers trailed by as many as nine points in the second half.Butler graduates Casey Fleeger added 13 points while Emily Wise added eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Men’s BasketballDespite 26 points and seven rebounds from Antawane Davis and 11 points from Slippery Rock High graduate Alex McDeavitt, BC3 fell to Garrett County (Md.) 102-58 on Wednesday.Butler graduate Bill Smith added eight rebounds for the Pioneers.

Women’s HockeyKatie Sines and Christy Pastusha scored short-handed goals in the third period to lift Slippery Rock University to a 3-1 victory over Liberty University.Amy Bauman also scored in the third period for the Lady Icers (5-2), which received assists from Bauman, Alli Zube and Lacy Allis.
