Warriors have weapons
CHERRY TWP — Time for a bit of role-reversal.
Moniteau was a struggling .500 team when it traveled to unbeaten Punxsutawney last season. This year, the Warriors are unbeaten as the Chucks are fighting to reach the .500 level.
Punxsutawney is 0-2 in KSAC-Large play and ha s the ability to give the explosive Warriors — looking to clinch the KSAC-Large title — a run for their money on Friday.
Kickoff at Moniteau is slated for 7 p.m.
“I told our kids to remember last year, how loose we were going up there and how we gave them a tough game as a result,” Warriors coach Jeff Campbell said. “Now they’re going to have the same approach coming to our place. There’s no pressure on them because no one expects them to win this game.
“We’re the hunted right now,” Campbell added. “We have to be ready.”
Moniteau (6-0) dropped a 20-12 decision at Punxsutawney last year. The Chucks went on to finish 10-1, losing the District 9 Class AAA title game to Clearfield.
“They came up to our place and gave us quite a tussle,” Punxsutawney coach Alan Nichol said. “They get in your face and play defense.”
Punxsutawney graduated eight starters on both sides of the ball and lost quarterback Logan Weaver via transfer to Indiana (Pa.).
The Chucks (2-4, 0-2) will be led by junior quarterback Garrett Zimmerman, who’s completed 57-of-112 passes for 916 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions on the year.
Senior wideout Luke Janocha has torched opposing secondaries all season with 26 receptions for 428 yards and a pair of scores.
Alex Fedigan will pace the rushing attack for Punxsutawney. He leads the Chucks with 475 yards and five TDs, while Jamie Bush figures to be a threat running and catching the ball out of the backfield.
“Alex is a hard runner, a slasher-type of back,” Nichol said. He helps to give us a balanced attack.”
The Chucks gave Karns City all it could handle in Week 5, although the Gremlins prevailed with a come-from-behind 21-20 victory. Punxsutawney also challenged St. Marys — trailing 13-6 heading into the fourth quarter — but the Flying Dutch reeled off 21 points in the final period for a 34-12 win.
Last week, Clarion defeated the Chucks 19-7, but had to stop Punxsy in the red zone three times.
“If they push the ball in from the 1-yard line on the one possession, that’s a different game,” Campbell said. “This is a good football team.”
Moniteau’s not too bad, either.
Ethan Pry has caught 18 passes for 474 yards and six touchdowns. He also has 45 tackles and three interceptions defensively.
Quarterback Kyle Armagost also has been able to find Joey Deal (12 receptions for 120 yards and a score) and Brayden McCorry in key situations. Armagost has thrown for 988 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushed for 618 yards and 10 scores.
Sophomore running back Dustin Geagan has 887 yards and nine TDs rushing.
