Smith's rushing keys Freeport
Damon Smith had a pretty good night.
The Freeport running back rushed for 209 yards on 25 carries and scored five touchdowns to lead the Yellowjackets to a 34-14 win over Apollo-Ridge in high school football action Friday night.
Three of Smith's TDs came from three yards out. He also scored on runs of 30 and 6.
His effort allowed Freeport (4-2, 3-1) to overcome a 6-0 deficit after the first quarter.
Smith scored three of his touchdowns in the second quarter as the Yellowjackets took command of the game 21-6.
Anthony Bozzarelli scored on a 5-yard run to give Apollo-Ridge (1-5, 1-3) the early 6-0 advantage.
The quarterback finished with 167 yards rushing and 59 yards passing, but also was intercepted twice.
Smith put the game away with two second-half scoring runs.
Grove City 17, Wilmington 0 — Erik Record rushed for 130 yards on 10 carries and scored on runs of 30 and 32 to keep the Eagles undefeated.Grove City (6-0) rolled up 292 yards rushing against the Greyhounds (5-1).The Eagles defense limited Wilmington to just 156 total yards.Wes Phipps added 102 yards rushing on 17 carries and Brian Murone booted a 23-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 10-0 halftime lead.
Ford City 21, Summit Academy 20 — A fourth-quarter rally came up just short for the Knights.Summit Academy drove from its own 8 to deep inside Ford City territory late in the game and trailing by a point, but a turnover ended the drive.Chris Highsmith caught a 49-yard touchdown pass from Sean McCausland midway through the fourth quarter to cut the Ford City lead to 21-20.McCausland also had an 18-yard TD run.David Carter started the scoring for the Knights with an 85-yard fumble return for a touchdown.Ford City, though, answered with 14 unanswered points to take a 14-6 lead and never trailed again.
