154 and counting
JACKSON TWP — The dean of Butler County soccer coaches recently reached an impressive milestone.
George Williams, who has coached the Seneca Valley boys varsity team since the 1995 season, won his 150th career game when his Raiders upended Penn-Trafford 3-0 Sept. 6 at NexTier Stadium.
His career win total stands at 154 entering today's section clash against North Allegheny.
“It kinda snuck up on me,” Williams said of the achievement. “I've just tried to maintain a high level of play over the years. The kids are developing not only as soccer players, but also as young men.”
The Raiders' most successful seasons under Williams have come recently.
The squad won its first section title under him in 2005 and followed it up with section crowns in 2008 and 2010. SV reached the WPIAL semifinals in 2008.
“Each team has its own strengths, its own makeup,” he said. “Obviously, there has to be a certain level of talent. Every year, you try and find that winning formula.”
Williams was a midfielder at Fox Chapel High before graduating in 1988. It was during his high school years when he thought of being a coach.
“I started helping out with summer soccer camps,” he said. “I really enjoyed helping the kids learn the game. That's also when I realized I wanted to be a teacher.”
After playing at Bethany College, Williams was a graduate assistant for two seasons and a full-time assistant coach for one. It was during the last of those years (1994) that he was part of the Bison's Division III men's national title team.
“We had a really tough schedule and our record was not that great,” Williams said. “But (the NCAA) took into account our strength of schedule. We made the playoffs and went on a great run.
“That's one of the most exciting times I've ever been a part of.”
His first teaching job out of college landed Williams as a seventh and eighth grade art teacher at Seneca Valley, a position which he still holds.
That same year, he also began to coach the boys soccer team.
“I wanted to coach at a good level and I also knew that getting a teaching job would be competitive,” Williams said. “Coming to Seneca Valley was a great opportunity. I've been fortunate to have been in the same place for so long. It's a great place to work.”
Sean Glackin has been Williams' varsity assistant and head junior varsity coach for three seasons. He gets to see the interaction between Williams and his players on a daily basis.
“He demands success from the kids,” Glackin said. “He's a great communicator and spends a lot of time in preparation.
“He's definitely a true competitor,” he added.
One reason for the program's recent success is a solid feeder program thanks to the Seneca Valley Soccer Association and Seneca Valley North Soccer.
“Both of those programs were still building when I got here and have boomed since then,” said Williams. “We've gotten a lot of talent from those organizations.”
The Raiders are currently 3-2 in Section 2-AAA (6-4 overall).
“I've said before that, when healthy, this team can achieve as much if not more than any group we've had.”
