Barnes, Raiders tame Tigers, 47-20

Oliver Philogene (6) beats McKeesport's Logan Holtzman (16) to the end zone in Seneca Valley's 47-20 win over McKeesport Friday night at NexTier Stadium.

JACKSON TWP — In a game that featured the WPIAL's top two passers in Quad-A, Forrest Barnes stole the show on the ground.

Seneca Valley's junior halfback rushed for 230 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries as the Raiders crushed visiting McKeesport 47-20 Friday at NexTier Stadium.

The performance is the second-most rushing yards in a single game in SV's history. Bill Davis ran for 301 in a 2002 win over Butler.

“It feels great to do something with history behind it,” said Barnes, who had touchdown runs of 1, 2, 60 and 70 yards. “(Quarterback) Jordan (Brown) was making great reads at the line and the offensive line and wide receivers did a great job of blocking for me.”

SV coach Don Holl gets to see Barnes in action during practice and games on a regular basis, but was still impressed by his latest outing.

“He's a heck of a player,” Holl said. “He's lightning fast and is also a tough runner. We try to get him a lot of touches.”

Brown did well in a supporting role, passing for 171 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 65 yards and another score.

“Last week was a rough one,” Holl said of a 43-29 loss at McDowell in which the Trojans scored two late touchdowns. “Taking nothing away from McDowell, but we felt we let one slip away.

“You can do one of two things after a game like that,” he added. “You can start pointing fingers or you can pull together. Our guys chose to pull together.”

McKeesport signal caller Eddie Stockett completed just 13-of-27 passes for 119 yards and an interception.

In all, the Tigers turned the ball over three times, leading to 17 Raider points.

The Tigers (3-1) were also penalized 18 times for 123 yards.

“Where didn't it go wrong for us?” asked McKeesport coach Jim Ward. “We had too many penalties and turnovers, but I give all the credit to Seneca Valley. A good team makes you pay for your mistakes and they certainly did that tonight.”

The Raiders (3-1) set the tone on their second offensive drive.

Taking over at its own 3-yard line, SV marched 97 yards in 14 plays. Barnes scored his first touchdown from 1 yard out, but it was his 13-yard run on a third-and-3 play from the Tigers' 14 that set up the score.

The Tigers hit the slippery slope late in the second quarter.

After Michael Denny's second field goal of the game put SV up 13-0 with 3:18 left in the first half, Donte Patterson scampered 40 yards to set McKeesport up at SV's 47. But on the very next play, Stockett's pass was tipped and intercepted by Raiders' linebacker Joe Duggan.

Brown hooked up with wideout Oliver Philogene for a 54-yard gain down to the Tigers' 7. Two plays later, Barnes scored to make it 20-0.

Seneca Valley wasn't done.

The Tigers failed to pick up a first down and a fumbled snap on the punt led to the Raiders taking over at McKeesport's 20 with just 17 seconds left in the half.

It was enough time for Brown to find Jonathan Dorogy open to the left. The latter juked a defender at the 3-yard line and crossed the goal line with one second remaining in the half.

The Raiders had taken a commanding 27-0 lead at the break, with their offense putting up 281 yards in the first two quarters.

“Everybody is doing their job on offense and that makes it easier on everyone,” said Barnes. “We're playing with a lot of confidence right now.”
