Butler County's great daily newspaper

IN BRIEF

The county commissioners Wednesday approved a 25 percent increase to a professional services contract with Frank Hulick for computer and printer support.

The rate increases from $40 an hour to $50 an hour.

Bob Moyer, director of county information technology, said Hulick's last rate hike was in 2004, when the number rose from $35 an hour.

Hulick provides technical support for all the computers and printers in district judges' offices and homes.

He also assists the county with website programming.

PITTSBURGH — Macy's is downsizing its downtown Pittsburgh store to occupy just six of the 12 floors that formerly housed the Kaufmann's department store.Macy's bought the building from Kaufmann's in 2005 and is still trying to sell it with plans to lease back space so Macy's would remain in the building.Kaufmann's had been in the building since 1887 and once had retail space on all 12 floors.Macy's has been gradually scaling back and plans to have just six stores, plus a mezzanine level, open for retail by the end of October.Macy's officials say the cuts mean retail space will drop from 775,000 square feet to 525,000 square feet with the changes. But the chain's officials say that's still more than twice the size of a typical Macy's store in a suburban mall.

The Minneapolis-based company that makes Cheerios cereal and Haagen-Dazs ice cream also reaffirmed its full-year adjusted earnings outlook. On the news, its stock gained 95 cents, or 2.5 percent, to close at $38.44 Wednesday. The shares have traded between $34.54 and $40 over the past year.General Mills, like nearly all food companies, has raised prices to offset higher costs for commodities from corn to fuel. But the company — like others in the sector — has had to weigh its price hikes against just how much shoppers are willing to absorb. Consumers remain cautious about their spending in the uncertain economy.
